The Butter and Egg Man, the only play Kaufman didn't write in collaboration with another writer, concerns a naive Midwesterner whom two producers attempt to sucker into producing a cheesy religious melodrama. The Midwesterner, however, may be a faster study than the producers think, comically turning the tables on the show biz vets. The Butter and Egg Man plays through Oct. 20 at the Atlantic Theatre.
