The Public Theater and Amnesty International USA hosted a rally to show solidarity and support for the persecuted Belarus artists and activists with Belarus Free Theatre on Jan. 19.
The hour-long peaceful demonstration outside the Mission of the Republic of Belarus to the United Nations featured speeches from Oskar Eustis, Tony Kushner and Belarus Free Theatre co-founder Natalia Kaliada, as well as shows of support from the theatrical community. Some supporters wore gags "to show the horror of persecution and the injustice of suppressed speech."
After recently meeting with and gaining the support of Hillary Clinton, the group delivered a petition to the U.N. High Comissioner for Human Rights at the start of the rally to shed light on the infringement of rights to the Belarusian artists' freedoms and rights after the disputed elections in their home country on Dec. 19, 2010.
