News   PHOTO CALL: Merkerson Brings to Life Birdie Blue at Second Stage Opening Playwright Cheryl L. West’s new play about a “tough, funny, big-hearted woman”, Birdie Blue, received it’s New York premiere on June 23 with the opening of the Off-Broadway production at Second Stage Theatre.

Having transferred The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee to Broadway last season, Second Stage now presents the new work by the previously praised West that stars S. Epatha Merkerson, Billy Porter (Ghetto Superstar) and Charles Weldon. At left, Doubt Tony winner Adrianne Lenox, as well as Porter and Spelling Bee composer William Finn are seen above West and Merkerson at the opening night party for Birdie Blue at Spanky's BBQ on West 43rd Street in New York City.

Birdie Blue is scheduled to run through July 17.
