The sign-up process for auditions began at 11 AM, though some excited and ambitious auditioners began lining up as early as midnight.
Once inside the building and signed up for a time slot, small groups were ushered into the audition room to perform a cappella for a casting director. Then, much like "American Idol," some were given a "golden ticket." These individuals moved on to the next round, performing for head casting director Bernard Telsey.
Here's a look at the crowd and a peek inside the audition room.
Further open calls for the new revival will be held in Los Angeles on March 30 to continue the search for a revival cast.
Jonathan Larson's Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Rent will begin previews Off-Broadway July 14 at New World Stages.
The new production will officially open Aug. 11. Michael Greif, who helmed the show's original Off-Broadway and Broadway productions, will again direct. The creative team will also include choreographer Larry Keigwin, music supervisor Tim Weil, set designer Mark Wendland, costume designer Angela Wendt, lighting designer Kevin Adams and sound designer Brian Ronan.
The production will include Bernstein’s incidental music for Lillian Hellman’s adaptation of The Lark, and Menotti’s The Unicorn, The Gorgon, and The Manticore.
Based on the novel and film by Frank Cottrell Boyce, the new musical will reunite Guettel with Tony-winning Light in the Piazza director Bartlett Sher.
