The 6:30 PM event recognized positive and inclusive depictions of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in the media. Martin (upcoming Broadway Evita revival) was presented with the Vito Russo Award and Russell Simmons with the Excellence in Media Award.

Two-time Tony Award nominee Patrick Wilson (Oklahoma!, "Angels in America") and Wilson Cruz (Rent) were among the presenters. Special guests included Tina Fey, the Fabulous Beekman Boys, Jane Velez-Mitchell and DJ Tracy Young.
The GLAAD Media Awards "recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives."
