Crystal graduated from NYU's Tisch School in 1970 with a BFA and attended classes in the 111 Second Avenue building, which served as the original home of Tisch. It is also where Crystal's father, Jack, produced "The Sessions" jazz concerts throughout the 1950s. Proceeds from the gala will help fund renovations of the historic building.
NYU alumni on hand to help honor Crystal included Whoopi Goldberg ("The Color Purple," Xanadu), Marcia Gay Harden (Angels in America, God of Carnage), Krysta Rodriguez (The Addams Family), Robin Williams (Bengal Tiger, "Good Will Hunting"), Isaiah Johnson, Jesse L. Martin (Rent, The Merchant of Venice), musician Paul Shaffer and Noah Weisberg (Elf, South Pacific).
