The 1905 play is directed by Nicholas Hytner (The History Boys), who serves as the artistic director of the National.

The cast is headed by Hayley Atwell in the title role with Simon Russell Beale, Clare Higgins and Paul Ready.

According to production notes, Major Barbara is the story of a woman who "works tirelessly for the poor at a Salvation Army shelter until a large but morally dubious donation is welcomed from her estranged father, a millionaire weapons manufacturer."

The show is running in repertory at the Olivier Theatre. Tickets are on sale through May 15. More information may be found at www.nationaltheatre.org.uk
