The musical stars Nathan Lane as Dionysos and Roger Bart as his slave, Xanthias. Bart replaced Chris Kattan, who departed from the musical only a bit more than a week before its opening night. Susan Stroman directed the show, which recounts Dionysus' journey to Hades to retrieve George Bernard Shaw, and return him to Earth.

On hand to celebrate the opening were, at left, Matthew Broderick and William Ivey Long, the show's costume designer, Jerry Zaks, and Leigh and Jonathan Tunick, the latter being the show's orchestrator. Below are Roger Bart, Michael Siberry, John Byner, director Susan Stroman, Burke Moses, Nathan Lane, Daniel Davis and Peter Bartlett.
