Lauren Bacall (with bookwriter Peter Stone and actress Marlo Thomas, who emceed the event) and Ruby Dee (alongside Women's Projects and Productions' Joan Didion and Carole Black) were named 2000's Women of Achievement June 5 at Tavern-on-the-Green. Bacall, immortalized by her screen roles opposite husband Humphrey Bogart in "The Big Sleep" and "Key Largo," has been a presence in films for the last 50 years, receiving her first Oscar nomination in 1997 for "The Mirror Has Two Faces." She returned to the New York stage this year as Lotta in Waiting in the Wings. A two time Tony Award winner for Applause and Woman of the Year, Bacall was awarded the Kennedy Center Honor in 1997.
