Puppet specialist Basil Twist's production of Respighi's La bella dormente nel bosco (Sleeping Beauty in the Woods) had its American premiere at the Spoleto Festival USA earlier this month.

The production included the voices of Daniel Sutin as the king, ambassador, and woodcutter; Michaela Martens as the queen, duchess and Spindle, Nicole Heaston as the princess, Edward Valdes as the prince and jester, Olga Makarina as the nightingale and blue fairy, Kathryn Day as the old lady and green fairy, and Patricia Risley as the cat and cuckoo. Neal Goren, artistic director of Gotham Chamber Opera, was the conductor.

The production travels to the Lincoln Center Festival next month.
