Classic Arts News Photo Journal: Chanticleer Premieres Hildegard: A Measure of Joy On June 3, the vocal group Chanticleer gave the world-premiere performance of Hildegard: A Measure of Joy, a music theater piece about the 12th-century abbess and composer Hildegard von Bingen.
A Measure of Joy depicts a meeting of cardinals considering whether Hildegard should be canonized. At left, some of the cardinals (Fraser L. Walters, Justin Montigne, Matthew D. Oltman) dispute her saintliness.

Francesca Zambello directed; the libretto is by playwright Donna DiVovelli. The score includes works by Hildegard and her contemporaries, as well as new music by R_gis Camp and Steven Stucky.

Chanticleer performed the work three times in the San Francisco Bay area this past weekend; the world-premiere tour contiunues next weekend with performances on June 10, 11, and 12 in Berkeley, San Francisco, and Sacramento.
