Los Angeles Opera marked its 20th anniversary on April 19 with a gala performance featuring general director Plšcido Domingo, Patricia Racette, and surprise guests Ruth Ann Swenson, Ver‹nica Villarroel, Roberto Alagna, and Angela Gheorghiu.

The evening included a performance of Act IV of Verdi's Otello, with Domingo in the title role and Patricia Racette as Desdemona, and the party scene from Act II of Strauss's Die Fledermaus, conducted by Domingo with Cynthia Lawrence as Rosalinde, Lucy Schaufer as Prince Orlovsky, Malcolm MacKenzie as Frank, Earle Patriarco as Falke, and Rod Gilfrey as Eisenstein.

During the Strauss scene, "surprise party guests" Swensen, Charles Castronovo, Villarroel, Mark Devan, Alagna, and Gheorghiu sang songs and arias, with Gheorghiu joining Domingo for "Lippen schweigen" from Lehšr's The Merry Widow and all of the guests accompanying Alagna and Gheorghiu in the toast ("Libiamo ne' lieti calici") from Verdi's La traviata.
