The overwhelming success of the film version of Kander and Ebb’s “Chicago” jump-started a long dormant area of Hollywood: the movie musical. Two long-expected projects finally made their way to the multi-plexes in the fall and winter of 2005.

After smashing box-office records and winning every award in sight, the only thing left for “The Producers” to triumph over was the movies. It will go into wide release just before Christmas. It took nearly a decade but “Rent” arrived, original stage cast mostly in tact, on the big screen in late November. Though reaction was mixed, the late author Jonathan Larson’s family gave the film its seal of approval and the release boosted the sales of the stage show at the Nederlander Theatre.
