Performances began July 6 at New York City Center for the concert revival of Elizabeth Swados’ Runaways, as part of the Encores! Off-Center series.
Runaways explores the experiences of runaway children. Ms. Swados, who passed away January 5, spent several months observing and interviewing child runaways in the creation of the piece, before it debuted in New York in 1978. The score weaves reggae, hip-hop, soul music and spoken-word poetry.
