The Second Stage Theatre production of the Diane Paulus-helmed new musical Invisible Thread, which blends African beats and a world pop score, officially opened Off-Broadway Dec. 2. The story follows a New Yorker's life-changing trip to Uganda and is inspired by the real-life experiences of Griffin Matthews, who co-created the show with Matt Gould.

Among the cast of Invisible Thread are Broadway actors Latrisa Harper (The Color Purple), Aisha Jackson (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), Corey Mach (Hands on a Hardbody) and Jamard Richardson (The Book of Mormon).

Performances began Oct. 31.

The cast also features co-creator Matthews with Nicolette Robinson (Brooklynite), Tiffany Mann (Sweeney Todd at Lincoln Center), Conor Ryan (John & Jen), Melody Betts ("Chicago PD"), Rodrick Covington (Central Avenue Breakdown), Kevin Curtis (A Chorus Line national tour), Tyrone Davis, Jr. (Shrek national tour), Nkrumah Gatling (Hair), Jason Herbert (Fela! tour), Kristolyn Lloyd (Heathers The Musical), Michael Lluwoye (Fable), Jeremy Pope (Choir Boy), Adeola Role (Lily’s Revenge) and Jamar Williams (Broken Window Theory).

Gould and Matthews' Invisible Thread, previously titled Witness Uganda, had its world premiere at American Repertory Theatre in 2014, helmed by Tony winner Paulus and featuring many of the new Off-Broadway cast members. The musical follows the life-changing journey of a young New Yorker who volunteers for an aid project in Uganda. "When his altruistic aspirations collide with the real world," describe press notes, "his life is changed in unexpected and profound ways." As Playbill reported in July, the show was able to crowd-fund enough money to send the the cast, creators and a film crew to Uganda.

Paulus has been attached to the project's development for several years and oversaw staged readings in New York late last year. Over the last few years, the musical, which is the winner of the 2012 and 2014 Richard Rodgers Award, has raised over $200,000 for the students' educations in Uganda.

The Off-Broadway staging of Invisible Thread features scenic design by Tom Pye, costume design by ESosa, lighting design by Justin Townsend, sound design by Jonathan Deans, projection design by Peter Negrini, choreography by Sergio Trujillo and co-choreography by Darrell Grand Moultrie. Remy Kurs is music supervisor; Gould is music director.
