Classic Arts News   Pittsburgh Opera Announces 2006-07 Season
The Pittsburgh Opera's 2006-07 season will include new productions of Gounod's Rom_o et Juliette and Mozart's The Magic Flute, as well as Britten's Billy Budd and Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci.

The season opens on October 14 with I Pagliacci, featuring Mary Mills as Nedda, Lester Lynch as Tonio, and Richard Leech as Canio in a Montreal production led by PO music director John Mauceri. I Pagliacci is traditionally joined at the hip with Cavalleria Rusticana, but PO will present the work as a stand-alone opera.

Rom_o et Juliette, a collaboration with the Spoleto Festival, will be performed in November, with Lyubov Petrova and Massimo Giordano in the title roles. Jean-Philippe Clarac and Olivier Deloeuil direct.

The Magic Flute opens in March with Amanda Pabyan singing Queen of the Night and Gregory Reinhold performing Sarastro. A collaboration with the Opera Theater of Pittsburgh, the new production is directed by Jonathan Eaton and designed by Danila Korogodsky.

In May, Nathan Gunn sings the title role of Billy Budd in Francesca Zambello's Covent Garden production. Greer Grimsley will sing John Claggert and Robin Leggate the part of Captain Vere. John Mauceri conducts; Christian Rath directs.
