Plácido Domingo will take the stage at the Wortham Theater Center to celebrate Houston Grand Opera’s return to the space following the effects of Hurricane Harvey. The one-night-only concert will take place September 26.
This marks a return to the venue for Domingo, who starred in Houston Grand Opera’s inaugural production of Aida at the Wortham in 1987.
After Hurricane Harvey made landfall in August 2017, Houston Grand Opera’s artistic home became completely flooded, causing the company to lose two performance spaces, rehearsals halls, costume shops, and offices indefinitely. However, the season continued as the group constructed a 1,700-seat theatre, named the HGO Resilience Theatre, with stadium and floor seating in the Houston Convention Center.

“We never considered cancelling the season,” HGO Artistic Director and Music Director Patrick Summers told Playbill at the time. “We hope that the beauty of opera will help people find hope and healing to carry them forward.”
Domingo’s upcoming opera performances include Germont in La Traviata and the title role in Il Trittico’s Gianni Schicchi at the Metropolitan Opera during the 2018–2019 season, as well as Rodrigo in Don Carlo and Juanillo in El Gato Montés: The Wildcat with Los Angeles Opera, where he serves as general director.
