Lauria, Bolton, Dilly and Australian actress Caroline O'Connor, who were part of the original Broadway production, repeat their work in the engagement that runs Dec. 11-29 at the Theater at Madison Square Garden, following engagements at Hartford's Bushnell Theatre Nov. 12-17 and the Wang Theatre in Boston, Nov. 20-Dec. 8.
In anticipation of opening night at MSG, set for Dec. 12, the stars of A Christmas Story pick their favorite Christmas songs and tell us why they made the list.
A Christmas Story, The Musical, which opened Nov. 19, 2012, at Broadway's Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, earned three 2013 Tony Award nominations, including Best Score, Best Book and Best Musical.
The musical, by songwriters Pasek and Paul and book writer Joseph Robinette, includes such songs as "Red Ryder," "Ralphie to the Rescue," "A Major Award" and "You'll Shoot Your Eye Out."
Dan Lauria: "Ave Maria" (by Perry Como). It's not Christmas Eve without me hearing Perry Como singing Ave Maria.
Dan Lauria: "White Christmas" (by Bing Crosby). People always tell me that they get glued to the TV when they catch "A Christmas Story" on television at holiday time. I can understand that. That's how I feel when I catch "White Christmas." I love this song.
John Bolton: "We Need a Little Christmas" (The New Christy Minstrels). I love those great, swingin' '60s vocal arrangements of classic carols by groups like the Ray Conniff Singers or the New Christy Minstrels. So sing-along-able.
John Bolton: The songs from the Rankin-Bass holiday specials. Those shows were such big events when I was growing up in the '70s. If you missed that year's showing of "Rudolph" or "Santa Claus in Comin' to Town" that was it. There were no videotapes. You had to wait a whole year.
John Bolton: "(Everybody's Waitin' For) The Man With the Bag" (Kay Starr). This and other retro gems are off of the "Ultra-Lounge" Christmas CDs. Yes, more retro. What IS Christmas if it's not nostalgia?
John Bolton: "The 12 Daze of Christmas" (Fay McKay). I saw Lypsinka do this one at a BC/EFA event and it blew me away. So hilarious.
John Bolton: Nothing is more "Christmas" to me than The Vince Guaraldi Trio's "Charlie Brown Christmas" album. The whole thing. On repeat.
John Bolton: And, I gotta mention "What Child Is This?" by anyone who doesn't over-riff and "Sleigh Ride" by everyone from The Boston Pops to Steve & Eydie to The Partridge Family. Happiest Christmas song ever.
Erin Dilly: "What Child is This" (by the Vince Guaraldi Trio). We would snuggle up and watch "Charlie Brown Christmas" every year. It meant the season was starting.
Erin Dilly: "The Christmas Song" (Nat King Cole). A Classic. I want to be trimming my tree when I hear this song.
Erin Dilly: "Jingle Bells" (Barbra Streisand). Love it. The sound of my childhood!!!
Erin Dilly: "White Christmas" (Bing Crosby). The sound of my nana's house. Love it so much.
