Playbill.com polled our readers via Facebook and Twitter asking them to share which actresses they would like to see play the iconic role on Broadway.

Here are some of our reader responses followed by our own commentary.

Nathan Hinds: Laura Osnes of course! Can’t think of anyone more qualified…
Jeremy Fillip: Laura Osnes! Her voice is perfect for the part.
Stella Grimaldi: Why, none other but queen Laura Osnes.
Brian Bacon: Laura Osnes, of course!
Hayley Goldstein: Laura Osnes. Most definitely
Diana Victoria Aljadeff: Now the best of the young Broadway sopranos is Laura Osnes (1985). She is doing Cinderella and of course she could be very good in The Sound of Music. Another soprano is the also marvelous Kelli O'Hara (1977) who was in South Pacific.
@BlakeG_17: Laura Osnes would be perfect
@marcgtheater: Would LOVE to see Laura Osnes play Maria if The Sound of Music was revived
@kevinrenn: Laura Osnes would be a great Maria in The Sound of Music! With her beautiful vocals, and her stage sweetness, she'd be fantastic

In 2007 Osnes made her Broadway debut as Sandy in Grease after winning the television competition "Grease: You're the One That I Want." Since leaving that production, Osnes has enjoyed starring roles in South Pacific, Anything Goes, Bonnie and Clyde and can currently be seen in the title role of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella. With Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella and South Pacific on her resume, Osnes would be a great candidate for a revival of their Tony Award-winning musical The Sound of Music; in fact, she starred in a concert version of that family-friendly classic at Carnegie Hall.

Sierra Boggess
Carmen Romero Lorenzo: Sierra Boggess! She'd be just lovely!
Jenna Jordan: Sierra Boggess!
Erin Coughlin Tower: Team Sierra
Maria Redwood: Sierra Boggess. She sang "I Have Confidence", which I know isn't in the Broadway version, but it was stunning, and I think she would do wonderfully.
@Trutheatrekid: Sierra Boggess! Have you seen her performance of "I Have Confidence"? #perfection Boggess made her Broadway debut as Ariel in The Little Mermaid in 2007. She has also been seen on Broadway in Master Class as well the 25th anniversary engagement of The Phantom of the Opera. She also portrayed Christine in the Phantom sequel, Love Never Dies. Click here to watch her performance of "I Have Confidence" from The Sound of Music.

Anne Hathaway

Nathan Bottorff: Anne Hathaway! Anne Hathaway, known for her screen performances in "Rachel Getting Married," "The Devil Wears Prada," "The Dark Knight Rises" and the "Princess Diaries" films, took home her first Oscar for her portrayal of the ill-fated Fantine in the film adaptation of Les Misérables. The actress has yet to make her Broadway debut.

Sutton Foster

Margaret Petrey Smith: Sutton Foster!
Mary Ciancio: Sutton Foster or Sierra Boggess
Rick Ross: Sutton Foster Sutton Foster is a two-time Tony Award winner for her performances in Thoroughly Modern Millie and Anything Goes. The actress was also Tony-nominated for her performances in Shrek the Musical, The Drowsy Chaperone and Little Women, and her additional Broadway credits include Les Misérables, Grease, Annie, The Scarlet Pimpernel and Young Frankenstein. Foster is slated to return to the Great White Way in the Broadway bow of Violet, but after the Roundabout Theatre Company limited engagement concludes in August 2014, she could star in a revival of The Sound of Music.

Ashley Brown

Alison Loughlin: I would love to see Ashley Brown as Maria!!
Randy Rosenthal: Ashley Brown
@msainewaters: I would love to see @ashleybrown9 play Maria ! She would be perfect for the role
@Kaitlyn1977: @ashleybrown9 !!! Ashley Brown originated the title role in Disney's Mary Poppins and received Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle award nominations for her performance. She has also been seen on Broadway as Belle in Disney's Beauty and the Beast. The Sound of Music would seem a natural fit for the gifted singing actress.

Kelly Clarkson
Christina Whalen: Kelly Clarkson would be great! Grammy Award winner Kelly Clarkson was the first winner of the Fox reality competition "American Idol." Following "Idol," she co-starred with runner-up Justin Guarini in the film "From Justin to Kelly." Clarkson, who has not been seen on Broadway, could be the next Grammy winner and former "Idol" to take on the role of Maria following Carrie Underwood's turn in The Sound of Music Live!

Annaleigh Ashford
Juan Carlos Garza Segovia: Annaleigh Ashford!! Her voice is great and she would bring some fun to the part Annaleigh Ashford received her first Tony Award nomination last season for her delightfully comic performance in the Tony-winning musical Kinky Boots. She has also been seen on Broadway in Wicked, Legally Blonde and Hair as well as in the Off-Broadway premiere of Dogfight.

Alli Mauzey
Whitney West: How about Alli Mauzey? She's in Wicked on Broadway right now. Alli has that sweetness about her that is perfect for Maria! Not to mention a killer voice. Alli Mauzey has been seen on Broadway in Hairspray, Cry-Baby and Wicked. The actress, who has played Glinda on Broadway and on tour, returned to the megahit Broadway musical Wicked in time for the anticipated tenth anniversary performance. Read about the tenth anniversary performance of Wicked here.

Samantha Barks
Katie Montana: Samantha Barks or Laura Osnes
@JenGreenwald: Samantha Barks Stage and screen actress Samantha Barks, who brought Eponine to life on the big screen in the recent film adaptation of Les Miz, also played that role in the London production in 2010 and again in the show's 25th anniversary London concert at the O2 Arena. Barks received great praise for her portrayal of Eponine, both on stage and on screen. The actress, who also appeared in the Hollywood Bowl production of Chicago and has been seen on the West End stage in Oliver! and Cabaret, would be making her Broadway debut if she played Maria in a revival of The Sound of Music.

Kelli O'Hara
Jason Sarnoff: Kelli O'Hara Kelli O'Hara is a four-time Tony Award nominee for her performances in The Light in the Piazza, The Pajama Game, Nice Work If You Can Get It and Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific. If she were to play Maria in a Broadway revival of The Sound of Music, she would likely score another Tony nomination. The actress will return to Broadway in Jason Robert Brown and Marsha Norman's The Bridges of Madison County, which will begin performances at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre Jan. 17, 2014.

Carrie Underwood
@CarrieU_Br: what kind of question is that? @carrieunderwood of course! :DDD she's perfect for the part! Audiences will see Grammy winner Carrie Underwood's turn as Maria in The Sound of Music Live! when it airs Dec. 5 at 8 PM. She will be joined by "True Blood" star Stephen Moyer as Capt. Georg von Trapp, Tony Award winners Audra McDonald as Mother Abbess, Laura Benanti as Elsa Schrader and Christian Borle as Max Dettweiler. The young cast set to play the von Trapp children are Ariane Rinehart (Liesl), Michael Nigro (Fredrich), Ella Watts-Gorman (Louisa), Joe West (Kurt), Sophia Caruso (Brigitta), Grace Rundhaug (Marta) and Peyton Ella as young Gretl. Perhaps the cast can transfer to Broadway following the NBC special.
