Playbill will be moving its offices this summer, which has staff members wielding roll after roll of packing tape, filling dozens of cardboard boxes, emptying hundreds of file folders and cleaning each shelf in every closet. It is the latter activity that may prove most interesting to our readers, for in cleaning one closet, we discovered boxes of old Playbills we didn't even know we had.
We found 10 copies of the Playbill marking the 6,138th performance of Cats — the night that production became the longest-running Broadway show of all time. We also found 5 copies of the Playbill for Les Miserables when that show celebrated its tenth anniversary in March 1997. Both Playbills have color covers and are in uncirculated condition. The Cats Playbill has the famous two green eyes design, plus #6,138, June 19, 1997 displayed on the front cover. The title page is in special white-on-black print and also notes the special occasion. The Les Miz cover has a pink waif on an orange background, very much in the style of pop-art icon Andy Warhol, with the words "Les Miserables, 10th Anniversary" printed in script on the bottom.
We will be putting these very special Playbills on sale, along with many other collectible Official Opening Night Playbills, at the Playbill Store. The sale begins at Noon EST on Monday, May 7th and will be conducted on a first come, first-served basis.
We will be sending an email within the next two weeks to all our Playbill Club members regarding prices, sale date, and how to purchase the Cats, Les Miserables, and other collectible Playbills. If you're not a Club Member, sign up (it's free!) at Playbill Club
