News Playwrights Project Names Winners of its 1999 Playwrights Competition The Playwrights Project, a local arts organization funded by city, state, federal and private grants, announced the winners of its 1999 California Young Playwrights Competition. The winners are Joel Maguen, an 18-year-old from L.A.; Hilary Rubin (17, L.A.); Molly Lambert (15, L.A.); and Lisa Asanuma (13, Escondido, CA). The winners' plays will be given professional-level staged readings at the Old Globe Theatre Nov. 12-Nov. 21.

The Playwrights Project, a local arts organization funded by city, state, federal and private grants, announced the winners of its 1999 California Young Playwrights Competition. The winners are Joel Maguen, an 18-year-old from L.A.; Hilary Rubin (17, L.A.); Molly Lambert (15, L.A.); and Lisa Asanuma (13, Escondido, CA). The winners' plays will be given professional-level staged readings at the Old Globe Theatre Nov. 12-Nov. 21.Last year, 16,000 people saw the Project's productions or participated in its educational programs. Playwrights Project Teaching Artists brought creative drama and playwriting programs into 115 classrooms in 45 different schools. More than 10,000 students saw a touring production of Napkins and a Pen from "Plays by Young Writers 96." The "lifestyles" program for senior citizens brought personal stories to life through theatre serving 100 seniors in residences, community centers and convalescent hospitals.

Average ticket prices at the 1999 festival are $12, with discounts for students, seniors and groups. The Old Globe Theatre is located in Balboa Park. For tickets and information call (619) 239-8222.
