News Poppy and Bar Bush Attend Sept. 1 Matinee of Hairspray Hairspray wasn't on the Republican National Convention's list of approved Broadway show, but it's won the favor of at least two significant GOPers.

Former President George Herbert Walker Bush and his wife Barbara—the parents of the current resident of the White House—will attend the Sept. 1 matinee of the Tony-winning musical, which features an actor in drag in the role of Edna Turnblad and a not-so-subtle joke about the irregularity of the 2000 presidential contest.

GOP delegates filled eight Broadway theatre on Sunday, Aug. 29, the convention designated theatre-going day. Upon exiting, many were greeted by angry protesters who chanted "Four More Months" and other phrases, and engaged the theatregoers in shouting matches.

The Republican convention, which has had a detrimental effect on Broadway box offices, concludes on Sept. 2.
