Classic Arts News Portland Opera Director Faces Surgery Portland Opera's general director, Christopher Mattaliano, will undergo surgery to remove a tumor from his small intestine, the Portland Oregonian reports.
The tumor was discovered, along with some internal bleeding, when Mattaliano was hospitalized after fainting a week ago. Results from a biopsy are not yet available.

Mattaliano's recovery from what is said to be "extensive surgery" will keep him from directing Rossini's The Journey to Reims, which opens November 6. Casey Stangel, the production's assistant director, will take over.
