Kevin Ligon and Steven Cupo have been added to the cast of the upcoming Kennedy Center production of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd.
Ligon will play Pirelli and Cupo will portray Jonas Fogg in the much-anticipated production of the Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical, which begins previews at the Washington, D.C. theatre on May 10. The remainder of the previously announced cast comprises Brian Stokes Mitchell (Sweeney Todd), Christine Baranski (Mrs. Lovett), Hugh Panaro (Anthony Hope), Mary Beth Peil (Beggar Woman), Walter Charles (Judge Turpin), Ray Friedeck (The Beadle), Celia Keenan-Bolger (Johanna) and Mark Price (Tobias Ragg).
Kevin Ligon starred on Broadway in Kiss Me, Kate; 1776; and The Secret Garden. His Off-Broadway credits include Forbidden Broadway and The Chosen, and he received a Jeff Award for his work in the national tour of Guys and Dolls. A Helen Hayes Award winner, Steven Cupo has performed at the Signature Theater and the Kennedy Center. His acclaimed one-man show is entitled "Songs of My Life."
Christopher Ashley — who helmed the Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Show — directs Sweeney, which is one of six Sondheim musicals to be presented during the Kennedy Center's Sondheim Celebration. The other five titles: Company, Sunday in the Park with George, Merrily We Roll Along, Passion and A Little Night Music.
