The 1960's-set tale of a Puerto Rican family premiered in 2011 at San Diego's Old Globe with Lopez in the central role of Inez Candelaria. Lopez is known for originating the role of Diana Morales in A Chorus Line. She is a Tony Award winner for A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine and also appeared in In the Heights, Pippin, Nine and more on Broadway.
Michael Rosen, who played Chino in the Broadway revival of West Side Story, portrays Alejandro, the son of Lopez's character. The company also features original Somewhere cast member Leo Ash Evens (Jesus Christ Superstar, West Side Story, Gypsy) as Jamie MacRae, Eddie Gutierrez as Francisco Candelaria and Michelle Cabinian as Rebecca Candelaria.
Giovanna Sardelli, who staged the Old Globe premiere, returns for the TheatreWorks engagement. Somewhere will officially open Jan. 19 for a run through Feb. 10.
Here's how the play is characterized: "The Candelarias are dancers, actors, singers, storytellers, and above all, dreamers. With her husband in California and her children reaching adulthood, matriarch Inez Candelaria believes in her dreams for her family so fiercely, it seems she can make them come true through sheer will. Her son Alejandro, the most talented dancer in the family, is not so sure – after giving up dancing following a childhood role on Broadway, he argues there is no point in getting up hopes only to be disappointed. When their home is demolished to make way for the filming of the movie version of West Side Story, the Candelaria children get their big chance at stardom as dancing extras. But do they possess the courage – or foolishness – to believe in their dreams as much as their mother does? This poignant family drama explores both the elation and disappointment that can come with striving for one’s ultimate dreams."
Somewhere has choreography by Greg Graham, scenic design by Andrea Bechert, costume design by Cathleen Edwards and lighting design by Steven B. Mannshardt. Lopez's The Whipping Man premiered off-Broadway in 2011 at Manhattan Theatre Club. He is currently a writer for the HBO series "The Newsroom." His plays also include Reverberation, Zoey's Perfect Wedding and The Legend of Georgia McBride.
