News Producers Nathan Lane Stars in Animated Musical Tale "Teacher's Pet," Jan. 16 Nathan Lane — currently reprising his Tony Award-winning turn in The Producers — reprises his Emmy Award-winning turn as the talking (and singing) dog Spot in the upcoming animated film "Teacher's Pet" based on the Disney television series.

Lane plays the lead character in the musical tale of a dog who longs to be a boy and has the chance to have his dream come true when a mad scientist claims he can transform animals into human through DNA manipulation. Other voices featured in the cast — among them some occasional stage performers — include Kelsey Grammer, Debra Jo Rupp, Jerry Stiller, David Ogden Stiers, Shaun Fleming, Rob Paulsen, Paul Reubens, Megan Mullally, Estelle Harris, Jay Thomas and Wallace Shawn.

Lane, who currently stars as Max Bialystock — a role he created — in The Producers on Broadway, has won Tony Awards for his turns in the Mel Brooks musical and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Other credits include The Man Who Came to Dinner, Guys and Dolls, Love! Valour! Compassion! and Laughter on the 23rd Floor. In recent turns, Lane played the title roles in Trumbo Off-Broadway and Butley at Boston's Huntington Theatre. He also appears in the upcoming film "Win a Date With Tad Hamilton!"

Timothy Bjorklund directs the film written by Bill and Cheri Steinkellner. The movie will be released in theatres, Jan. 16.
