Directed and choreographed by Dan Mojica, the Gershwin musical will begin previews at UCLA's Freud Playhouse Sept. 5 with an official opening the following evening. With musical direction by Gerald Sternbach, My One and Only will play a limited engagement through Sept. 17.
York, most recently seen on Broadway in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, will be joined onstage by Michael Gruber as Billy Buck Chandler, Vicki Lewis as Mickey, Larry Cedar as Prince Nicolai, Clinton Derricks-Carroll as Reverend and stage and screen veteran Betty Garrett as Madam Magix.
The creative team comprises Bradley Kaye (set design), Tom Ruzika (lighting design), Phil Allen (sound design) and Heather Carleton (costume design).
With a score by George and Ira Gershwin and a book by Peter Stone and Timothy S. Mayer, My One and Only, according to press notes, concerns "an aviator, a Channel swimmer and America in 1972." The musical opened at Broadway's St. James Theatre in May 1983, playing 37 previews and 767 regular performances before closing March 3, 1985. Tommy Tune and Twiggy led the cast, and the musical received nine Tony nominations. My One and Only features such Gershwin classics as "S'Wonderful," "Strike Up the Band," "Nice Work if You Can Get It," "Funny Face" and the title tune.
Rachel York was most recently on Broadway in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. A Drama Desk Award-winning actress, York's additional stage credits include Sly Fox; Dessa Rose; Kiss Me, Kate; City of Angels; Les Misérables; The Scarlet Pimpernel; and Victor/Victoria. The actress also appeared as Reno Sweeney in the Reprise! staging of Anything Goes, as Mother in the Paper Mill Playhouse mounting of Ragtime, and she portrayed television legend Lucille Ball in the CBS movie "Lucy." My One and Only will play Tuesday-Friday evenings at 8 PM, Saturdays at 2 and 8 PM and Sundays at 2 and 7 PM.
