The production will begin previews July 16, open July 18 and play a limited run through July 26 as part of the annual Almeida Summer Festival 2008. Following its London run, the play will transfer to Edinburgh's Traverse, where it will play as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Nocturne revolves around the legacy of an event that happened 15 years earlier, when a teenager accidentally kills his little sister in a car accident. In this one-man play, the man that he has become tries to cope with the ramifications of his guilt and the estrangement of his surviving family, while making a desperate search of redemption.
Casting is still to be announced, but Matt Wilde, a former associate director of the National Theatre Studio, will direct. He has previously directed Roy Williams' Out of the Fog for Almeida Projects, Get Tested for the Old Vic's 24 Hour Plays, The Sky's The Limit for the Old Vic's New Voices, Polar Bear for Birmingham Rep, On Tour for the Royal Court and Liverpool Everyman and Roy Williams' Slow Time for NT Education.
Rapp's plays that have previously been seen in the U.K. include Ghosts in the Cottonwoods and Gompers, both produced at the Arcola; and Blackbird and Finer Noble Gases, both at the Bush, the latter in a production that transferred from the Edinburgh Fringe. His other work includes Animals and Plants, Stone Cold Dead Serious, Faster, Trueblinker, Drams of the Salthouse and Red Light Winter.
The Almeida's annual summer festival of contemporary opera, music and theatre will also feature the London premiere of a new opera, An Ocean of Rain, by Yannis Kyriakides (music) and Daniel Danis (text), running from July 10-13; and British African Theatre Company Tiata Fahodzi presenting Tiata Delights 08, a week-long presentation (July 28-Aug. 2) of work from British African writers. In addition, there will be one-off concerts by singer Barb Jungr (on July 22) and Ensemble MAE (on July 12), and a two-performance run of a collaboration with Tate Modern, Theatre of Possibilities, that uses the gallery's exhibition of Cy Twombly to illustrate key areas of his creative life, on July 20 and 21.
