It's relatively rare for theatres to revive Three Men on a Horse (though Tony Randall's National Actors Theatre did a Broadway mounting a few years ago). Even rarer are revivals of Let It Ride, the 1961 Broadway musical based on that 1935 George Abbott and John Cecil Holm comedy.

That said, with NY's "Encores!" and CA's "Reprise" making concert stagings of overlooked musicals all the rage, novice producer Mel Miller is also getting into the act. He's bringing a concert version of the Jay Livingston & Ray Evans musical to NY's Lambs Theatre for 15 performances, June 11-28.

Both composer Livingston and lyricist/librettist Evans are expected to be in the audience opening night -- quite a feat, since they first started collaborating at the University of Pennsylvania in 1934. Tunes by the duo include "Mona Lisa," "Que Sera Sera" and "Buttons and Bows."

The irony is that producer Miller never even saw the original Broadway mounting of Let It Ride. A Columbia University student back in 1961, he fell in love with the cast album but was too poor to afford a ticket to see the actual show. That production starred Sam Levene, George Gobel and Barbara Nichols and ran for a disappointing 68 performances at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre. Three years earlier, Livingston and Evans had more success with Oh, Captain!, a Tony Randall vehicle directed by Jose Ferrer.

Let It Ride, with a book by Abram S. Ginnes (assisted by Ronny Graham), tells of a naive fellow who inadvertently gets involved with dangerous bookies. The Lambs staging will feature two songs not in the original Broadway production. Starring in the show are Robin Baxter (Footloose), David Gurland, E.J. Carroll, Gary Lynch, Aaron Ellis, Jennifer Miller, Wayne Pretlow, Tom Reidy, Rachel Ricca and Joy E.T. Ross. Thomas Mills directs.
