Classic Arts News Rear Light Marks New York Debut of Beijing Modern Dance Company The Beijing Modern Dance Company makes its New York debut at the Joyce Theater tonight.
The company is performing Rear Light, a dance inspired by and set to the music of Pink Floyd's The Wall, and choreographed by Li Han-Zhong and Ma Bo. The work's theme of reconciling tradition with identity and freedom and influences from abroad reflects, according to the choreographers, issues facing a generation of youth in China.

The program runs through February 13.

Beijing Modern Dance Company, founded in 1995, blends Chinese tradition with modern dance, using some of China's best modern dancers. The company won the National Dance Award from the Chinese government in 1996, and the Grand Prix in the International Modern Choreography Competition in Belarus in 1999.
