News Red Bull's Hit Revenger's Tragedy Closes Jan. 22 The Red Bull Theatre, an Off-Broadway company which focuses on Jacobean drama, concludes its surprise hit production of the classic The Revenger's Tragedy Jan. 22 at The Culture Project.

The show has become the biggest success in the history of the relatively unknown Red Bull company. It concluded its initial run on Dec. 23, but not before collecting rave reviews from the likes of The New York Times and Time Out New York, which included the show in its list of best shows of 2005. The return engagement began Jan. 6.

The Revenger's Tragedy (1607) is a title well known to scholars of theatre history, but a play rarely staged in the U.S. It is thought to be written by either Thomas Middleton (The Changeling) or Cyril Tourneur. Like many other Jacobean dramas (named for the period of James I's reign in the early 1600's), it depicts a dark, sinister, cynical world, replete with corruption, betrayal and grisly (and often inventive) murder. Its central character is Vindice, whose plot to revenge himself on the decadent Venetian court sets off a horrific chain of events.

The work is adapted and directed by artistic director Jesse Berger. The large cast features Jason C. Brown, Denis Butkus, Aaron Clayton, Saudia Davis, Amefika El-Amin, Ryan Farley, Ty Jones, Daryl Lathon, Claire Lautier, Paul Niebanck, Chris Oden, Petronia Paley, William Peden, Naomi Peters, Matthew Rauch, Russ Salmon, Daniel Cameron Talbott, Haynes Thigpen and Marc Vietor.

Red Bull Theater takes its name from one of the leading theatres in London during the Jacobean era.

Tickets are $40. Call (212) 352-3101.
