The revival of Sylvia Regan's 1940 Morning Star, Steppenwolf's fourth mainstage production, will extend through June 26. The production began previews April 22 for an original run May 2-June 20. Steppenwolf director Frank Galati directs.

Morning Star revolves around a widow and her extended family on New York's Lower East Side. Spanning 1910-1931, historic events like the Triangle Shirtwaist fire, World War I, and the Great Depression shape the lives and destinies of the family.

Star's cast includes Shannon Cochran, Jenny Bacon, Melanie Moore, Elizabeth Ledo, Jon Wellner, Rick Snyder, Yasen Peyankov, Paul Adelstein, David New, Roderick Peeples and Ora Jones.

Though Galati's been a Steppenwolf ensemble member since 1986, he hasn't worked at the Wolf since his Everyman played there in the 1995-96 season. Other works with the company include his acclaimed adaptation of Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, which transferred to New York for critical success on Broadway (and made a star of Gary Sinise), an adaptation of Faulkner's As I Lay Dying, Early Possessions, Wallace Shawn's Aunt Dan and Lemon, and a revival of You Can't Take It With You. Most recently, Galati directed Broadway's Ragtime for Livent.

Playwright Regan had been a childhood friend of Group Theatre-ite Clifford Odets and has written numerous plays including Every Day But Friday, A Hundred Million Nickels, Safe Harbor, 44 West, The Twelfth Hour, and Zelda. Her biggest success came in 1953, with The Fifth Season which ran 654 performances. Designers for the Steppenwolf revival are Santo Loquasto (sets and costumes), Brian MacDevitt (lights) and Rob Milburn (sound).
