What do the Broadway musical High Society and Rocky the Flying Squirrel have in common? Though nobody's saying for the record, they may have the same director. Des McAnuff, who was brought in to doctor High Society in previews, reportedly is in talks to pilot the live action/animated film The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle. The picture, according to an article in Variety, is being produced by Tribeca Films and Tiffany Ward for Universal Pictures and Tribeca. McAnuff, who was for many years the artistic director of California's La Jolla Playhouse, has staged such Broadway hits as Big River and The Who's Tommy. More recently, he was drafted to assist High Society director Christopher Renshaw.
The film wouldn't be the first for McAnuff, but it would be a departure. The director -- who was unavailable for comment -- is currently preparing for the June release of his first foray into film, a period drama called Cousin Bette, starring Jessica Lange and Elisabeth Shue. The Bullwinkle film, based on the whimsical Jay Ward cartoons of the 1960s, is scheduled to begin production this year.
