Liza Minnelli is recovering in a hospital in Fort Lauderdale, FL, after being felled by viral encephalitis, Reuters reported (Oct. 23). Minnelli, a stage and screen legend with two Tonys and an Oscar to her credit, checked into Cleveland Clinic Florida Hospital few days ago. Apparently, Minnelli first collapsed on Oct. 8 at a house where she was staying in Florida. She was taken to the hospital and released on Oct. 16. However, she soon became dehydrated and returned to the clinic.
"She was quite sick and was in very serious condition but is now recovering well and we expect to release her in a few days,'' Dr. Maurice Hanson told Reuters.
Minnelli won Tonys for Flora, The Red Menace and The Act. In recent years, she struggled through an erratic run in Victor/Victoria and an emotional concert comeback at the Palace Theatre.
