Film star Christian Slater will be joining the cast of Side Man for its October 20 opening at Broadway's John Golden Theater, reported Variety (Sept. 21). "I've heard that it's definitely going to happen, but nothing's signed yet," show rep Gary Springer told Playbill On-Line about the Slater casting.
Slater will replace Robert Stella as Clifford, the narrator of the piece about a character's love of music ruining his marriage. Sella is currently treading the boards in Cabaret (also a Roundabout production), replacing Tony-winner Alan Cumming as the Emcee, while Cummings is on-leave to appear in Julie Taymor's film adaptation of Titus Andronicus.
Slater, known for his Jack Nicholson-esque demeanor, rose to stardom in the late eighties after appearing in the cult-classic Heathers in 1989. Other films starring Slater include: Hard Rain, Broken Arrow, True Romance, and Pump Up the Volume.
