The Off-Broadway return of Men on Boats, Jaclyn Backhaus’ acclaimed comedy, officially opens August 1at Playwrights Horizons. The production, which premiered at Clubbed Thumb’s 2015 Summerworks Festival, kicked off a limited return engagement July 20.
Reprising their roles from the premiere staging are Hannah Cabell (The Father), Danielle Davenport (An Octoroon), Danaya Esperanza (Our Lady of Kibeho), Donnetta Lavinia Grays (O, Earth), Birgit Huppuch (Judy), Layla Khoshnoudi (The Offending Gesture), Kelly McAndrew (Perfect Arrangement) and Kristen Sieh (RoosevElvis). New additions to the cast include Jocelyn Bioh (An Octoroon) and Elizabeth Kenny (Sick).
The return staging, directed by Will Davis, is at Playwrights Horizons’ Peter Jay Sharp Theater and is co-produced by Clubbed Thumb.
The show is billed as a “joyfully anachronistic retelling of the 1869 Powell expedition.” It follows the story of a one-armed captain and his crew of volunteers as they set out on the Colorado River.
The production features scenic design by Arnulfo Maldonado, costume design by Ásta Bennie Hostetter, lighting design by Solomon Weisbard and sound design by Jane Shaw. The production stage manager is Erin Gioia Albrecht.
