Rik Reppe Searches for America, Post-Sept. 11, in Fringe Show

News   Rik Reppe Searches for America, Post-Sept. 11, in Fringe Show Staggering Toward America, a solo show about one man's cross country attempt to contend with the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, will play the New York International Theatre Festival Aug. 13-23.

The piece, described as a cross between the styles of Spalding Gray and Anna Devere Smith, is the work of Rik Reppe, a onetime actor and writer who some years ago abandoned a performing life to found a successful management consulting business in California. After the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, however, he felt unsettled and disconnected. Reppe closed his business and set out on an eight-week trip across the country that led him to Ground Zero, the Pentagon, the field in Pennsylvania where the fourth highjacked plane crashed, and many places in between. Jack Rowe directs the play, which has a successful run in Los Angeles, winning good review and two awards from Backstage West.

Staggering Toward America plays at The Theatre Under St. Marks (94 St. Marks Place). Call (212) 279-4488.
