Michael Sexton, who had a success at P.S. 122 with Groff's Jimmy Carter Was a Democrat, will direct the work. Starring are actor-magician Steve Cuiffo as Great, Aubrey Dollar as Trilby, Emily Swallow as Henrietta and Laura Kai Chen as Egypt.
The play, which features actual magic, provides a quirky look at a small time magician named Great, who's skilled at illusion, but not so adept at relationships. Nonetheless, he exerts a magnetic pull on two woman, one his former assistant, the other his current helper. Love, secrets and illusion, as well as the trick behind a famous act called The Hypnotic Balance, are among the pervading themes in the tale.
The title refers to a signature trick in which a canary in enclosed within the three other listed items.
The play had its world premiere at the 2003 Humana Festival in Louisville.
