Considered one of the best plays of the '98 Summer Season, The Judgement (O Julgamento), a play by Daniel Herz, has been attracting great audiences to the Laura Alvim Cultural House in Rio de Janeiro. It opened on January 16, and stars the award winning Laura Actors Company (A Companhia de Atores de Laura).
Based on Friedrich Durrenmatt's classic The Visit, the play deals with justice guilt and revenge on the part of the individual in mass society. It is the story of the people of a small European town who must kill one man to make themselves rich.
Durrenmatt was a Swiss author of avant-garde plays and existentialist detective novels.The Visit, one of his best known plays, was also made into an opera by Gottfried von Einem in 1971.
Director Herz adapted the script, which originally focuses only on the protagonist, the sentenced man Alfredo Schill, and also explores the unbalanced personalities of the habitants. He explains ...."It is important to discuss the hypocrisy of a society which decides to condemn itself in order to become millionaires"...
