According to Variety/Performance Magazine, Riverdance was the top-grossing Variety/Family Entertainment Show of 1998 with an attendance of 787,154. The Irish dance piece finished ahead of such shows as Lord of the Dance, David Copperfield and The Ringling Brothers Bros. & Barnum & Bailey Circus.
Riverdance was originally presented as a seven minute intermission spectacular for the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest. That performance was a success, resulting in the show's expanision into the Riverdance that premiered at the Point Theatre, Dublin in Feb. 1995.
Riverdance received its American premiere at Radio City Music Hall in New York March 1996 and won a 1997 Grammy for Best Musical Show Album, which features the original Bill Whelan score. Two companies of Riverdancers still travel the US -- the Lee and Lagan companies (named for two rivers in Ireland).
