Obie Award winner Robert O'Hara has been tapped to helm MCC Theater’s upcoming New York premiere of BLKS. The Aziza Barnes play will run April 18–May 26, 2019, at the Newman Mills Theater, one of two venues in MCC’s upcoming new complex at West 52nd Street (opening in January).

In BLKS, poet Barnes introduces Octavia, Imani, and June—a trio of 20-somethings in New York City who rally to “resurrect their fly” in a quest for intimacy and a purpose. The play, which marks Barnes’ playwriting debut, premiered at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre (in a production directed by Nataki Garrett).

O’Hara previously wrote and directed Bootycandy, earning him an Obie (having previously won for directing In the Continuum). His additional credits include writing Insurrection: Holding History and directing Bella: An American Tall Tale.
