The 1966 musical by John Clifton (music and lyrics) and Ben Tarver (book and lyrics) is known among show fans as a cult favorite, a charming jewelbox musical set in a wayside in England. It's based on the play by Ashley Dukes.

Jenn Thompson (TACT's Lost in Yonkers, Eccentricities of a Nightingale) directs the show. Music direction is by Bryan L. Wade.

Here's how York bills the show: "A wayside inn — The Innkeeper is about to close for the night, for lack of customers. Suddenly an accident to a coach brings to this humble setting of a handsome Nobleman and his Lackey, a beautiful Lady and her Maid. But the Nobleman isn't noble, the Lackey is no lackey, the Lady is no lady, and the Maid is no maiden. The stage is set for romance — and intrigue — in Man with a Load of Mischief. And we are set for a banquet of gloriously melodic and witty songs."

Performances will play Oct. 1 at 3 PM & 7:30 PM and Oct. 2 at 3 PM at The York Theatre at Saint Peter's (Citicorp Building, entrance on E. 54th Street, just east of Lexington Avenue).

York Theatre Company is known as Off-Broadway's home for intimate musicals, like the current attraction Closer Than Ever (now through Nov. 25).

Man with a Load of Mischief was embraced by critics when it premiered Off-Broadway. An earlier York presentation was preserved on a cast album. Reid Shelton and Virginia Vestoff were in the 1966 cast.

Tickets are at $39.50 ($25 for members of the York's new membership program) and are available online at yorktheatre.org, by calling (212) 935-5820, or in person at the box office.
