News Rock-Themed Cavedweller Opens at New York Theatre Workshop, May 8 Rent director Michael Greif heads up the New York Theatre Workshop production of Cavedweller, which opens May 8. Previews for the Kate Moira Ryan-penned adaptation began April 18 at the downtown venue for a run through June 1.

Cavedweller is taken from "Bastard Out of Carolina" novelist Dorothy Allison's sophomore offering. The play follows a woman's journey home to the children she left, following the death of the rock star who took her away that family.

The cast of Cavedweller includes Shannon Burkett, Stevie Ray Dallimore, Carson Elrod, Adriane Lenox, Jenny Maguire, Lynn McCullough, Deirdre O'Connell and Merritt Wever.

Greif, who originally helmed Rent at NYTW, has directed the recent productions of BETTY RULES as well as Suzan-Lori Parks' Fuckin' A. He heads a creative team that includes Riccardo Hernandez (sets), Ilona Somogyi (costumes), Jennifer Tipton (lighting), Jerry Yager (sound) and Jan Hartley (projections).

The production features original music by Stephen Trask and Julia Greenberg. Trask is no stranger to the rock musical genre having collaborated on the Off-Broadway hit Hedwig and the Angry Inch with John Cameron Mitchell.
