For those who can't wait until Sept. 23 — the first preview of the upcoming revival of Flower Drum Song — the 25th Asian-American International Film Festival will screen the 1961 film version of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical on July 25 at 6 PM. Directed by Henry Koster, the 133-minute USA film starred Nancy Kwan as Linda Low, James Shigeta as Wang Ta, Benson Fong as Wang, Jack Soo as Sammy Fong, Juanita Hall as Madame "Auntie" Liang, Reiko Sato as Helen Chao, Patrick Adiarte as Wang San, Kam Tong as Doctor Li, Victor Sen Yung as Frankie Wing, and Soo Yong as Madame Fong. Joseph Fields wrote the screenplay for the film, which includes several Rodgers and Hammerstein tunes.
Created in 1978, the Asian-American International Film Festival (AAIFF) has become known as "The First Home to Asian-American Cinema." The nation's first festival dedicated to screening works by artists of Asian descent, all AAIFF programs are held at the Asia Society and Museum at 725 Park Avenue (at 70th Street).
