Part of the Cabaret at the Castle series, Roland's concert is titled Richard Roland Swings Shubert Alley. Show time is 8 PM.
"Inspired by the swing arrangements and song stylings of vocalist Mel Tormé and arranger Marty Paich of the 1960s, Roland will present the Broadway songbook through jazz, combining his two favorite musical styles," according to press notes.
In a statement Roland said, "There was a time during the 'Golden Era' of Broadway when musical theatre truly represented the pop music world, and many of the jazz standards we know today were born then. Most theatre tunes then just fell naturally into the hands of jazz musicians, who reinterpreted the songs and through different rhythms, tempos and chord substitutions, and presented to the world an entirely new way of listening to the music. I was fortunate to have been raised by parents who were Broadway performers as well as appreciators of jazz. I grew up on it. So, expect to be swung!"
The evening features musical direction by Michael Cabe.
Roland was seen on Broadway in Thoroughly Modern Millie, Follies and The Scarlet Pimpernel and Off-Broadway in The Fantasticks, Zombie Prom, The Cocoanuts and Forever Plaid. He has been arranging and singing with his jazz vocal group Monday Off since 1999. The Castle on the Hudson is located at 400 Benedict Avenue, Tarrytown, NY.
