Polanski directed and appeared in the 1967 film "The Fearless Vampire Killers," which was later adapted by Steinman and book writer Michael Kunze for the 1997 German-language musical production, Tanz der Vampire. Polanksi directed the Vienna world premiere of the musical.

Tony Award nominee David Ives was later brought on for the 2002 Broadway production, which starred Michael Crawford in his first and only Broadway appearance following The Phantom of the Opera. Following a chilly critical reception, the $12 million musical shuttered after 61 previews and 56 regular performances.

The French-language version, Le Bal des Vampires, will begin performances Oct. 16. Stage Entertainment produces. Performances are scheduled through July 2015.

The Broadway production was punctuated with ballet dream sequences, naughty jokes and references to Meatloaf lyrics. The New York songlist included such songs as "Angels Arise," "God Has Left The Building," "Original Sin," "Garlic," "There's Never Been A Night Like This," "Don't Leave Daddy," "A Good Nightmare Comes So Rarely," "Death Is Such An Odd Thing," "Red Boots Ballet," "Say A Prayer," "Come With Me," "Vampires In Love (Total Eclipse of the Heart)" "Books, Books," "Carpe Noctem," "When Love Is Inside You," "Eternity," "Confession Of A Vampire," "The Ball: The Minuet," "Never Be Enough" and "The Dance Of The Vampires."
