Mstislav Rostropovich has withdrawn as conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre's new production of Prokofiev's War and Peace, the news agency RIA Novosti reports.

Performances scheduled for December 6, 7, and 8 have been canceled; opening night is now scheduled for December 9. According to a notice on the Bolshoi web site, Bolshoi artistic director Alexander Vedernikov will replace Rostropovich on December 9 and 27 and Paul Sorokin will conduct on December 13 and 14.

The Bolshoi has not given a reason for the change, according to RIA Novosti.
