It was previously reported that payments had been summarily stopped by First Night Records, who recorded and released the album, after the company invoked an original clause in the contract governing cast albums, agreed between the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) with Equity, that royalties would only be paid for the first 25 years after a recording is made. Following protests by some of the original cast members, First Night Records has now reinstated royalty payments, and First Night Records managing director John Craig, who is also a BPI council member, told the UK's Stage newspaper, "We [the BPI] are going into negotiation with Equity to explore a new contract."

Martin Brown, assistant general secretary of Equity, said, "We are delighted that the problems over royalty payments to the original cast of Les Miserables appears to have been settled and we welcome the opportunity to have talks with the BPI about updating and renewing this agreement."
