News RSC Presents Premiere of New Musical Matilda, Opening Dec. 9; Matthew Warchus Directs Matilda, a new musical based on the novel by Roald Dahl that was first published in 1988, receives its world premiere in a Royal Shakespeare Company production at the Courtyard Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon Dec. 9, following previews that began Nov. 9, for a 12-week run through Jan. 30, 2011.

Directed by Matthew Warchus (La Bete on Broadway, and whose previous credits in London and on Broadway include Yasmina Reza's Art and God of Carnage as well as the farce Boeing-Boeing), it has a book by playwright and screenwriter Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Australian stand-up comic, musician and composer Tim Minchin.

Matilda tells the story of a little girl with extraordinary powers. The three schoolgirls who alternate in the title role are Adrianna Bertola (age 11), Josie Griffiths (age 10) and Kerry Ingram (age 11). They are joined by Lauren Ward as Miss Honey, Bertie Carvel as the headmistress Miss Trunchbull, Paul Kaye and Josie Walker as Matilda's parents Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood, and Peter Howe as Matlida's brother Michael.

Ward has previously appeared at the RSC in Pericles and The Winter's Tale, and was most recently seen in the West End as Baroness Elsa Shraeder in The Sound of Music at the London Palladium.

Carvel starred as Leo Frank in the London premiere of Jason Robert Brown's Parade at the Donmar Warehouse. Other credits include Rope at the Almeida and The Pride at the Royal Court.

Kaye has appeared in "Inspector George Gently," "Skins," "Pulling" and "Being Human" on TV and Woody Allen's film "Match Point." Walker was recently seen in Corrie at Salford's Lowry Theatre; other theatre credits include playing Linda in Enjoy for Theatre Royal Bath productions and starring in Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Beautiful Game.

Also in the company are Verity Bentham, Emily-Jane Boyle, Michael Kent, Melanie La Barrie, Matthew Malthouse, Alastair Parker, Michael Rouse, Nick Searle and Emily Shaw.

There are three teams of children sharing the roles who are on stage for alternate performances. Joining Adrianna Bertola as Matilda are Kuan Frye (Bruce), Ruby Bridle (Lavender), Katie Lee (Amanda), Arthur Byrne (Nigel) Jack Christou (Eric), Annabel Parsons, Shyanne Sanders, Thomas McGarrity and Charlie Callaghan. Joining Josie Griffiths as Matilda are Jake Bailey (Bruce), Rebecca Stoll (Lavender), Jadie-Rose Hobson (Amanda), Adam Scotland (Nigel), Toby Murray (Eric), Ellie Simons, Jessica Adair, Elliot Allinson and Callum Henderson. Joining Kerry Ingram as Matilda are: James Beesley (Bruce), Misty May Tindall (Lavender), Lara Weaver (Amanda), Robert Madge (Nigel), Jake Pratt (Eric), Jessica Daugirda and Daisy Brophy.

The creative team also includes designer Rob Howell, choreographer Peter Darling, lighting designer Hugh Vanstone, musical supervisor and orchestrator Chris Nightingale, dramaturg Jeanie O’Hare, sound designer Simon Baker, illusionist Paul Kieve, associate choreographer Ellen Kane and music director Bruce O’Neil.
