Ruth Wilson, a Golden Globe winner for The Affair, actually found her way back to Broadway via the hit television show, she told Ryan Seacrest and Lisa Rinna on Live With Kelly & Ryan March 25.

Director Sam Gold helmed the final episode of the Showtime series and offered her a role in his Broadway mounting of King Lear starring Glenda Jackson.

“I’ve never done Shakespeare before, and I thought I’d better give it a go,” said Wilson, “and this opportunity came up.” The show began previews at the Cort Theatre February 28 prior to an April 4 opening.

Wilson, who plays both Cordelia and The Fool, was previously nominated for a Tony Award for her Broadway debut in Constellations opposite Jake Gyllenhaal. While starring on Broadway, Wilson is also starring in and executive producing a new series called Mrs. Wilson, based on her her family’s wild story.

“My grandmother was seemingly happily married to her husband, Alec Wilson, for 21 years. He died in 1963 and she discovered soon after his death that he was married to another wife and had a whole other family that she didn't know anything about. She kept the secret for 40 years,” she revealed. “She then wrote a memoir that she gave to my dad and my uncle 20 years ago.

“Ten years ago, the year after she died, we then found out a lot more about my grandfather,” Wilson continued. “There might be more wives. He was a spy [for MI5] and wrote 23 spy novels. It keeps unraveling. This story is based on the memoir.”
